The Debate On The Minimum Legal Drinking Age - 2364 Words

The Debate on the Minimum Legal Drinking Age There has been a debate going on about the minimum legal drinking age, or â€Å"MLDA†. Some people believe it has no impact on our youth, and should thus be lowered to the standard age of adulthood, age 18. They refuse to acknowledge the true significance of this law, however, and continue to see it as a futile attempt to control the inevitable. Yet in reality, having an MLDA of 21 has many benefits, and stands for a healthier view of alcohol consumption, regardless of the way people perceive it. It is for this reason, that the minimum legal drinking age should not be lowered to age 18. Opponents of this ideal, claim various arguments in support of their opinion. For example, state Rep. Richard Marron states that, â€Å"It just doesn t sit right with me that people [at the age of 18] have the right to do everything else, including serve their country, but don t have the right to consume alcohol† (Chiappetta, Should Drinkingâ € ¦). Those who agree with this, argue that legal adults (individuals who are 18 and older) should have the right to determine their own choice regarding alcoholic consumption, versus having the government force a decision on them. What these individuals must realize is that having the MLDA set at age 18 is not a constitutional right. According to procon.org, â€Å"A US district court ruled on Dec. 22, 1978 that MLDA 21 is ‘reasonably related to a state objective of reducing highway crashes’†. This court also stated that,Show MoreRelatedMinimum Legal Drinking Agre1173 Words   |  5 PagesThe legal age of adulthood in the United States for most purposes is 18. Emotion and Stress †Does Guilt and Sympathy Affect Helping Behavior Free Essays

Helping behavior is perceived as socially acceptable and highly appreciated. Therefore, people tend to praise others when they have helped the needy. We used to think that only those people with positive personality, such as sensitive and kind, perform helping behaviors. We will write a custom essay sample on Emotion and Stress – Does Guilt and Sympathy Affect Helping Behavior? or any similar topic only for you Order Now Nevertheless, whether one acts good or not also greatly depends on his or her emotional states. Through this psychology project, I found that people are more likely to perform a helping behavior when they feel guilty or sympathetic. Emotion is an indispensable part of humanity. It is a way for people to understand what they feel towards events and people around. Unlike lower-order animals, emotion helps people to act like a human. Serial killers are emotionless. People with emotionless may probably feel nothing when they are hurting or harming others which are highly unacceptable in society. Since people tend to engage more when they are happy but withdraw from daily activities when they are upset, we can see that our behaviors are always determined by our emotions. Yet, people tend to perform more helping behaviors when they feel guilty or sympathetic. How do these negative emotions push people to help their neighbors? Guilt is an emotion that occurs when people believe that they have violated a moral standard while sympathy is the feeling of being sorry for somebody showing that people understand and care about somebody’s problem. They are both negative rather than positive emotions. People do not feel good when they are guilty or sympathetic towards somebody. Is that true people involve more in altruistic behaviors when they are guilty or sympathetic? There is an experiment conducted by Jean Decety (2009) who is a neuroscientist studying the relationship between guilt, sympathy and helping. He is a professor of Psychology at the University of Chigago and is specialized in affective neuroscience. In the study, student subjects are required to observe their coworkers receiving shock. Some of them are made to think they are responsible for the coworker’s suffering (guilt condition), while others merely observe the suffering (observer condition. There is also a group working with coworkers receiving no shock. Later the three groups are given opportunities to help a third party who is not in the original experiment. The result shows that subjects in the guilt and observer condition are more likely than the control group to give their helping hand to the third party. The finding suggests that the feeling of guilt and sympathy and the willingness in engaging in an altruistic act is highly correlated. Subjects are more willing to help others when they feel sorry for a third person even they do not responsible for their unfortunate. At the same time, altruism may aroused merely by witnessing one’s suffering. There are three reasons for people who feel guilty and sympathetic to engage in helping behaviors. Altruism is a form of disguised self-interest and helps in mood management while restoring one’s self-image. People help others for their own benefits. It is always unpleasant to watch another organism suffer. When one empathizes because of their misfortune, strong negative emotion is arisen. People are actually seeking to alleviate the unpleasant feelings that their distress arouse in them. It is a kind of internal self-reward. This can reduce the negative feeling by saying they have at least done their part in helping the unfortunate. Therefore, altruism is the attempt to reduce the empathetic feeling that arises in people. Besides, people help others when they are guilty and sympathetic for mood management. Both guilt and sympathy are negative emotions which are unpleasant. Therefore, they can be reduced by performing a helpful act or any other positive means. In a study (Decety, 2009), subjects who had inflicted or witnessed an unfortunate situation received an unexpected monetary reward. The result shows that subjects who received rewards are less likely than those who do not receive any and remain in bad mood in engaging helping behaviors. This indicates that helping is just one of the positive means which can uplift one’s emotion. People are motivated to engage in altruistic act in order to alleviate the negative emotion associated with guilt and sympathy. Apart from that, when people feel guilty, they have probably done something wrong and regret for their actions. For instance, students have cheated in an examination. Their self-images are broken due to the negative behaviors performed. They understand that their behaviors are unacceptable and they do not want to be perceived as bad. In order to restore the self-image in others’ eye, people will perform more pro-social behaviors. This is to prove that they are still the good guy. It seems to be upsetting that if humanity performs a helping behavior just for reforming their own self-image rather than from a genuine feeling of guilt in helping others. Fortunately, it is not the case. Research suggests that unwitnessed transgression causes the same amount of donation as witnessed transgression. Therefore, it is acceptable to conclude that people perform altruistic act are at least partly caused by the feeling of guilt but not a need to repair their own self-image in others’ eye. Undoubtedly, there is a use for these findings. Since many charitable organizations know very well the psychology of human, many of the fund-raising activities we can see in daily lives make use of people’s empathy. It is common to see volunteers showing photos of the needy in the less-developed countries persuading pedestrians to donate money to them. Guilty may arises as people may recall they have wasted a lot of resources and sympathy may arises as living conditions in those less-developed countries are really poor. With the arousal of these negative emotions, people may therefore engage in altruism. It is true that one’s personality largely determines the likeliness in performing helping behaviors. Yet, our willingness in performing these behaviors also depends on the emotional states at that moment. The experiment done by professor, Jean Decety, proves that the feeling of guilt and sympathy can definitely facilitate altruistic behaviors. As a result, organizations may make use of this psychology as we know that even the meanest person may have the experience in helping others provided that they are at the right emotional state. Security Issues In Networking Samples †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Security Issues In Networking. Answer: Introduction Security issues in networking relates to the requirements which are required for business or even the network supervisor which help in safeguarding of the network , the computer systems in addition to the resources that are reliable by the networks [11]. The network needs to be safeguarded from any specific not authorized entrance, malicious elements as well as tracking consistently. Networking safety is a significant issue to each business that has a computer which is linked to the coverage. The networking security that has been jeopardized signifies that the rival or even the hacker might gain an entry to the susceptible or maybe the crucial information which they might remove or even render off with the data that could lead to loss in data or perhaps the complete system devastation [2]. The networking security is much more taken as the specification protection from the outside invaders in the program. With the increase in the number of people getting linked to the networks, the security threats that causes the massive harm is increasing [11]. The networking security is the primary section of the network which must be managed given that the information is transferred between the computer systems which could be vulnerable to attack [12]. Over the past five years individuals who manages the network security have seen the massive increase of the attackers as well as the criminals creating of malicious attacks which are pumped into the networks globally. In this report, it will highlight the background and the related areas of networking security, it will also explain on this topic, the technical details and the advantages and the disadvantages of the networking security. Additionally, the report will show some improvements that have been done about the networking security over the years. Background and related areas The security issues in networking have led to the widespread of the identity theft as well as financial fraud. Spam, viruses as well as the spyware have caused problems to the clients along with the businesses. A breach in security could irreparably damage on the brand of the organization [3]. An example in the USA, the security concerns threaten to slow on the federal adoption of the electronic medical records. In the EU it is an equivalent issue whenever the consumers confidence which refers to the security and data protection is the barrier to a lot faster growth of the e-commerce across the member state borders .Today it has been observed that the information attacks has become a profitable business organization and it is more often been controlled by the organized crime syndicates [5]. The growth in the sosphicated cybercrime business models, which may include the appearance of the criminal businesses, tend to be more often developed on selling the tools and services for the sta rting of the networking attacks , as opposed to offering the information that has already been gained from the attacks . The security technology has continued to progress , that has changed from the passive , the point to point product dependent to active , which is the end to end methods to the security recognition , and quarantine [9]. Moreover, the internet service providers are contending on the safety in addition to the consumers ISPS provided security that is section of their services. The security concerns in the networking continues to be a significant topic of issue by the policy makers around the globe who are concentrating on the state of the data system. The policy makers intend to make certain that the users of the networks employs the ideal technology as well as the process practices in order to make the networks more secure [4]. Other related topic on the subject is on the networking issues in the internet of things that has highlighted on the networking issues In the IOT. There are many vulnerabilities, attacks and the mitigation with regards to the internet of things. Explanation of the topic This topic explores on the security issues or concern in networking. In any network it can encounter various threats which may lead to the compromise of the data for the clients or the business. The security issues in networking exists and organization can be prone to attack if they do not have appropriate mechanism in place to protect themselves against the vulnerabilities and the attacks[3]. Some of the security issues are virus and the worms, Trojan, SPAM, phishing and the packet sniffers. These are the methods which are used by the attackers to exploits on the network. The virus and the worms are the programs which has been loaded onto the system without the knowledge of the user and runs against the wishes of the owner [8]. The viruses could cause huge amount of damage to the networks. In case the virus are downloaded and then the computer systems in the networks might be impacted because they could make copies of on its own and spread across the networks. This is a problem to t he networking administrator since attackers are able to steal data from the business. On the Trojans these are programs which are malicious and when installed in the networks it can tamper with the allocation of the files and cause a massive damage to the system in a given network [7]. This is a security issue since individuals or the business may lose important information which they did not have a backup for and store. Another security concern that is highlighted is the spam. This is the flooding of the internet with many different replicates of the same message, to try to forcing the information on individuals that do not otherwise could not want to obtain it. Phishing is an email fraudulence method and is one of the biggest security issues when it comes to networking [10]. This method is the worst security threats since there are many individuals who uses the computers which are linked to the networks and they may be amateurs and who be vulnerable in giving their data that cause s situations such as theft of money and the identity theft. Technical details The process of security issues in networking begin with the authentication of the user who logs to the appropriate passwords as well as the users name which are the one factor authentication [11]. When the authentication becomes known the two factor authentication could be used. Networking aspect is all about constructing, design and the use of the network that may include the physical, the selection along with the use of the telecommunication protocol as well as the computer software for the use and managing on the network. Advantages and disadvantages The security in networking entails securing on the networks. The security involves prevention of any misuse or the authorized access to the networks or the resources. Some of the advantages and the disadvantages of the needs of security in networking is as follows; Advantages To protect the data: The security keeps a check on to the unauthorized access. The network usually contain numerous confidential data such as the personal client data [1]. Any person who breaks on the system might impede on sensitive information. The security in the network needs to be there to protect it. Prevents cyber-attack: most of the attacks in networking usually derives from the World Wide Web. You will discover attackers that are specialists in and then there are viral strain attacks. If negligent, they might perform lots of information obtainable in the network [4]. The networking security could prevent these attacks from harming the system. The levels of access: The security software offer numerous amounts of access to the various users. The authentication of the users is accompanied by authorization techniques in which could be looked at whether or not the user is certified to gain access to different resource [2]. Disadvantages Time consuming: The software that are used in networking could be difficult to work with. They may need authentication using two passwords in order to ensure double security that can be entered each time you edit on the document [1]. Requires skilled staff: when it comes to the management of network it is not an easy task. It entails a highly skilled technicians are able to handle on any security issues that may arise [5]. The networking administrator should be employed in order to ensure the smooth working of the network. These individuals should be adequately be trained in meeting on the requirement. Improvements about the topic which has been made over years There has been improvement which have been made over the years over the security issues in networking. There has been growth rate of the broadband in regards to the customers and the bandwidth against the growth of the cyber-crime [1]. The network operators have gained ground over the years. It has been seem that there has been strong network authentication as well as authorization which would capitalize on this trend. The value of networking would continue to grow, and individuals are using them in interesting ways. Over the years there has been security issues in networking such as zombie computers and botnets, passwords attacks as well as the maliciously coded websites [7]. These are security concern which have occurred over the years and which have caused the networking issues to arise. Conclusion The security issues is a very difficult topic. Each and every idea of what the security level is and the accepted risk. The key for building for carrying secure networking would be to define the security ways to the business enterprise. As soon as this has been undoubtedly defined, everything which happens the network could be examined with regards to the policy. The Pearl Essays - The Pearl, Kino, Pearl, Poetry,

The Pearl Character Analysis of Kino from The Pearl Kino, a character from the story The Pearl, is a prime example of a developing character. From the start through to the end, he develops drastically. At the beginning, he was thought out to be a good loyal husband but as time went on he became a selfish, greedy person who would do anything for money. When the story began Kino seemed to be a good husband who wanted nothing more than to be able to support his family. After a scorpion had stung Coyotito, Kino prayed that he would find a pearl not to become a rich man but so that he could pay the doctor to heal the baby, as he would not work free. After Kino had spent long hard hours searching the ocean floor, he finally found the pearl he had worked for. At first when he found it, he only wanted to pay the doctor to cure Coyotito. However as time passed he began to think of all the things that he could acquire with the money form the pearl and began to develop greed and selfishness. When people asked him what he would buy now that he was a rich man, he was quick to list several items that came to his mind. One of these items was a rifle. Kino wanted a rifle because he wanted to show power over the rest of his village. When Kino took the pearl to the pearl buyers to sell, he was offered one thousand pesos. Kino declined that offer claiming that his pearl was The Pearl of the World. By reacting in such a manner he yet again demonstrates his greed. It is not about saving Coyotito anymore, for he is already feeling well, it is now about the money. Although one thousand pesos was more money than Kino had ever seen he demanded that he would get fifty thousand pesos. Later in the text, Kino discovers Juana trying to destroy the pearl, causing Kino to become very angry, and resulted in him beating her. Although Juana was in very much pain she accepted the beating as if it were a punishment and stayed with Kino. A while later Kino was attacked by another man who wanted the pearl for himself and defended his pearl by killing the man. It is around this point in the story where Kino displays his greatest point of greed and selfishness. When Kino gets ready to attack the trackers Coyotito lets out a cry awakening one of the sleeping trackers. The tracker on watch described the cry as being the cry of a baby, however, the tracker who had just awaked described it as being a coyote. The tracker on guard then lifted his rifle and shot in the direction of the sound. This sparked the deadliest of fuses in Kino, which turned him from a normal man into a fearsome, uncontrollable, machinelike man killing everything in it's path. When Kino returned to the village he looked at the pearl and began to realize the effect it had on him, his family, and his village, and decided to throw it back into the ocean where it came from. Kino has paid a large price to learn such a valuable lesson, that we should not let greed and our want for something to overcome us and let us lose sight of the important things in life such as family, health, and life itself.

4 Ways to Combat Negativity at Work

4 Ways to Combat Negativity at Work We all have that one co-worker who’s just plain†¦ negative. He or she comes in from the elevator followed by a sad, grey cloud. They spend all of their time grumbling about work- having either too much or too little, and their personal lives don’t sound much better. There’s always one in every office, and often to caricatured proportions. But it can be easy to drift into that negative territory. Just to make sure you haven’t taken on any of these bad habits or deflated attitudes, be on the look-out for the following four signs of encroaching negativity at work.   Avoid your own black cloud.Watch Your PostureRemember your first days on the job? You came to work all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, spine straight, head up, typing with your fingers on your home keys, sitting tall in your swivel chair, and drinking vegetable juice for lunch! Or, you know, some version of that kind of effort. But with time, and setbacks, and disappointments, your bad moods h ave started to sink into your bones. Before you know it, you’re slouched over your keys, slumping as you walk, and sneering at your screen. Even if you’re just stressed or inattentive to the ways in which your posture might be wavering, it’s making you look bad to your boss, who values positivity in outlook and professionalism in demeanor. Straighten up!Curb the ComplaintsIt’s too cold, too hot. The meeting was too long, too short. The coffee sucks. The vacation package sucks. Your insurance sucks. Your weekend sucked. The printer†¦ don’t get me started on the printer.Make sure you’re not constantly complaining, even if there are things that you could (reasonably) constantly complain about. And stop complaining altogether about things not in your power to change. If you find yourself ranting and raving for 20  minutes at a time, sit yourself down and ask why you’re suddenly so frustrated at work. But whatever you do, keep the c omplaining to a minimum. Start to notice every time you do it and keep track.Force Yourself to be FriendlyThat sounds awful, but how many people pop by your cubicle for a chat? Ask you to grab a coffee? Wait for you to head to lunch? If the answer is no one (especially if it used to be everyone), then you have some work to do. Not spending at least a small part of your workday chatting to coworkers is a pretty good sign that you’re not universally well-liked. Even if you aren’t a people person, try encouraging a little more social atmosphere. And the best way to make friends is to be upbeat and pleasant to be around! Can the PessimismLand a new project? Get a promotion? Is your first thought one of annoyance at how much extra work you’ll have to do? Or what stress you will be under? Or how many more hours you’ll have to log? That’s a bad sign. When even good news seems like bad news, it’s time to give yourself an outlook makeover. But don†™t worry! Even if you have slipped into the negativity bubble, it’s not too late to pull yourself back into the light. Remember, nobody likes a Negative Nelly. Get yourself back on the right track.

Critique of a text Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Critique of a text - Essay Example Unfortunately, this article does just that. ‘Inconvenient lives’ is an insight into the reasons why humans resort to abortion, supported by statistics and facts and the writer’s own vehement anti-abortion views. Bork, in this article, answers the questions whether abortion is always killing of a human being and is it done mostly for convenience? He takes the stand that abortion is akin to taking a human life by stating scientific research regarding how human life begins; drawing comparisons between a fetus and an elderly human being; discussing the various reasons through statistics as to why women opt for abortion and criticizing the views of some of the pro-abortion advocates. The writer draws the conclusion that abortion is an immoral act and the reasons behind committing it are irrational. He believes that women solicit it because it seems to be the most viable and convenient solution for their own multiple problems that might arise due to unwanted pregnancy. The writer opens the argument by giving the summary of how a fetus comes into being and develops into a full-fledged human being. According to him, killing the organism formed after the fusion of a male sperm and female egg is like killing a human being. It is quite evident that the writer cannot demarcate between a human tissue (the zygote) and a living person (the mother). By stating scientific and medical opinion he is just trying to impose that this human tissue is important enough to have rights of its own. It shall be most unfortunate however, to grant it rights equal to or superior than that of a woman which is a human being, all flesh and blood with thoughts and emotions. It is an absurd comparison that only diminishes the value to a woman. Much dramatic light has been thrown on the rights that the fetus should be granted but at the end the writer himself admits that â€Å"†¦the fetus cannot survive
